“Football is my life.” – Michel Salgado
At a team like Real Madrid, there was never such a thing as just “good enough.” Global fame and a long winning tradition meant that only the most driven, committed, talented players could meet the Real Madrid standard. That made Real Madrid the right team for Michel Salgado.
Salgado served as a respected, feared defenseman for ten seasons, helping lead them to two championship trophies. Described by his teammate Steve McManaman as “Probably the most aggressive player I played with in my career,” Salgado became renowned for working harder, training harder, and demanding more of himself than virtually any of his contemporaries. During his tenure the team accumulated four La Liga titles, two victories in the UEFA champions league, and 2002 UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental cup successes.
Deemed “a Madrid institution” and “one of Spain’s best young full-backs” by the press, Salgado collected a total of 53 caps for his country, as well as representing Spain at Euro 2000 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. After nearly two decades as a professional, he ended his career with three winning seasons with the Blackburn Rovers. Today, he shares the knowledge and skills he gained throughout his long career with aspiring young players, building in them the confidence, drive, and commitment needed to succeed.
